Holiday Destination Ideas in USA

Updated: Jan 26

Every year, we get multiple requests to travel over the Christmas and New Year holidays and often people get sticker shock when they realize how much more money is required to travel over the dates they have available. There are a few reasons for this. Most of it is supply and demand. Almost everyone has the same days off for the two weeks that span Christmas and New Year's so you have thousands and thousands of people who want to travel on the same exact dates. There are only so many accommodations available so that drives the prices up.

Also, many people book their holiday travel about a year in advance so by the time some people get around to asking us to help, things are already booked which either leaves less desirable places to stay or puts their destination out of their budget.

So, I thought I would share some popular destinations that you might not have considered already on your own.

San Diego, CA – It has mild weather, friendly people and the sun shines more than 300 days a year. It is also blessed with considerable natural beauty with broad, gorgeous beaches on its west side and deep canyons in the east. When other more typical holiday destinations get filled up or prove to be too costly, San Diego can provide a pleasant alternative for someone who wants to escape the winter doldrums.

Palm Springs, CA – Party like the Rat Pack in Palm Springs, where Hollywood darlings used to play under the desert sun. The stars may have gone, but their legacy remains in the mid-century architecture and free spirit they left behind. Grab your sunglasses and an elaborate cocktail, then lounge by the pool like true studio royalty. If pool parties aren’t your style, try a tour of Palm Springs’ most famous homes, a cable car trip up scenic canyon cliffs or a round of golf at one of the area’s excellent courses. This desert gem has something for the star in all of us.

Island of Hawaii – Nearly everything about the Island of Hawaii (commonly referred to as the “Big Island”), feels larger-than-life. Here, you’ll find Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano, the vast moonlike landscape of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the southeast and giant, snow-capped mountain peaks of Mauna Kea, the “white mountain.” This island tends to get overlooked when it comes to holiday getaways so there is a chance that you could score something great on this island.

Phoenix, AZ – South central Arizona’s communities of Phoenix and Scottsdale share a saguaro cactus-filled Sonoran Desert landscape and more than 330 days of sunshine per year. Friendly Scottsdale is about one-eighth the size of its neighbor (Phoenix) and its lively hotel-centric social scene has been compared to Miami’s South Beach, without the beaches. What can you do? Go for a hike or ride a hot air balloon across the grand Sonoran desert. Walk through the towering cactus and colorful desert flowers of the 50-acre Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. Visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West in Scottsdale.

Key West, FL – The Florida Keys lie between the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. This buoyant string of 120 or so miniature mangrove-fringed tropical islands meanders off the southern tip of Florida, connected by the 113-mile Overseas Highway, a continuation of U.S. Route 1. The highway winds its way across the water from Key Largo to Key West, the southernmost of the islands. If you want a tropical getaway without using your passport, Key West might be the solution you have been looking for!
